SQUAD game crash solutions

Post by Lafayette »

Good day gentlemen, and ladies too.
Please post here what seems to work in minimizing game crashes.

There are also server side induced crash, that only the admin living in the dungeon next to the datacenter can help with...

- multiple displays ; one managed to have less crash occurences by disconnecting one of his monitors ( error driver "nvlddmkm" stopped working )
to be confirmed

- erasing game preferences upon each SQUAD game update is recommended. Here is a link to game dev support for how to do that.

https://offworldindustries.zendesk.com/ ... ings-cache

Rather time consuming solution, because doing so deletes all local game settings (key bindings, graphic, audio settings and more...)

- setting up graphic settings

My method :
First try to max out screen resolution to higher your hardware can. Your display native resolution and frequency is the best way to start with.
To do so, start game, go to settings, Toggle up performance debug, so you can see fps and latencies induced.
Then match game res to native monitor res, switch ALL graphic options to off, apply. Launch training scenario go all the way to gun range and try to find 500m targets, watch closely fps and latencies. Then at the gun range add graphic optimization one by one, and see what helps the most spotting the one guy further away, trying to maintain fps roughly 30% above native frequency of your monitor.
Mine is 3840x2160@60Hz, so i try to keep 90fps.
Maybe check again you have same readings after a game restart.
Then, in game settings first tab, limit game fps to 10-20% higher to native frequency. Try and see which setting from native freq to up 20% more gives best image smoothness when you look around and scope farther distances.
In my case if i set it to 59fps or 60fps for 60Hz i experienced some flickering, after 61fps not any more, soft spot @70fps setting.
This last step helps graphic card cool down as it is not trying to work 110% capacity all the time.

Note that mouse sensitivity does affect visual rendering too (don't ask, just check and tune until it is best at the gun range).

Played 4 hours continuously without game crash after erasing pref and graphic tuning.

Comments and questions are gladly welcomed.

have you tried rolling back your display driver to an earlier version before all this happened?

The way i see driver updates, there is always greater probabilities to having more problem solved in latest versions of drivers. Using outdated drivers should stay a last resort option if you are still stuck with a problem. Of course motherboard bios just as graphic card bios should be paired with their appropriate drivers which is the right one is always a guess and try, staying up to date gives me less work to troubleshoot.

Edit :

WARNING - DANGER - PELIGRO!

Do NOT mess with the bios ( microcode of your hardware ), rolling back might not be possible as easily, there is an important chance to brick your hardware, only use clearly identified bios update from the manufacturer for your specific version of it ( one model commercial designation often refers to different component versions on the PCB build ), check and check and check again before applying, it is also good practice to search online feedback from users who tested the bios update you are looking at.
If it works fine DO NOT break it.
