Turns out, that it was the EA app that was the issue.

I’m giving it time to settle before I buy it.

It’s cheaper on Steam but I can’t have one game on there whilst everything else is on EA!
Fall forward. Sometimes, it’s the best way to figure out where you’re going. Never be discouraged, never hold back, give everything you got, and when you fall throughout life remember this: fall forward. Denzil Washington

We’re not the avatars we create. We’re not the pictures on the film stock. We are the light that shines through. All else is just smoke and mirrors. Distracting, but not truly compelling. Jim Carrey

I have mine installed on the EA app but was one of the lucky few that didn't have the issue.

Joined a queue of approximately 330,000 at 4pm and was glad to see it only took about 5 minutes to clear.

Really enjoyed the gameplay so far, it can be a bit chaotic at times but I haven't had a game in which 1 side completely dominated and choked into a corner. Haven't used the aircraft as that was never my forte but the tanks have been quite fun providing you avoid the overpowered antitank mines.

Gave flying a go for the first time ever in battlefield. Went about as good as I expected it to. Got a fighter jet, flew towards an objective, forgot the button for the rockets, panicked and tired to pull away, smacked into the cliffs! 10/10 would try again

Too many palyers chasing kills for unlocks and not enough playing to the objective, balance is a pile of shit, you can have a load of players on one side all between 10 and 25 rank, then on the other side there's loads over 35, plus some on 48 50. Conquest is the only one worth playing as you can at least win a round and troll the guy with 60 kills and 2 deaths crowing how he won, more than likely a yank too.

There are definately those matches where the balance is squiffy at best but there have been a bunch more games where it has been really close or the enemy has ran away a bit and we've clawed it back to win by double digits.
I find recognising the games that are a bit hopeless and playing with people who PTFO will make the gaming more enjoyable.
I also had a great round in a tank where we got into it a third of the way through the match on Liberation Peak and never got back out of it. That was down to my top gunner being awesome and on it with repairs and constant callouts! Its the most fun I've had on Battlefield in a while
I survived the great server crash (23/10/2018)
