Thanks for this. Have a DJI Phantom 2 and although I don't fly it much at all, at least I shall be legal.
Of course if you are going to do illegal things such as fly it around Gatwick or take drugs into prisons, you probably won't bother registering lols.

Aye, seems silly, but then they can throw the book at you extra hard if you don't have a license /and/ you're up to no good as well. It's a kin to proof of intent to do wrong.

Given the potential for damage to aircraft, it hardly seems silly. Especially when the professional/TV grade stuff can weigh into the 10's of kg, and fly up to 10,000ft.

£9 is a very reasonable fee, and a small burden on top of the Airspace/operation permits required for flying near the public - these are the overly restrictive policies, not the licensing.
