Net Neutrality

Post by 0v3rz34l0u5 » Thu Dec 14, 2017 6:43 pm

Not sure if anyone has seen this but it looks like it could stop being a thing in America. If it came over to the UK, it could really kill our community and others like it. ☹️

Don't believe everything you read in the Guardian. It's mostly full of shit like the Mail.

@Ztranier, I completely agree with you, the Indepedent is becoming very trashy. Some of the “news” is not news! Transparency isn’t the concern here, it’s the fact the FCC has repealed Net Neutrality.

It is a problem and it could impact us all, not just the americans.

If you don't or won't pay the providers to accept or prioritise your content then people are either not going to be able to see your stuff or the allowed bandwidth will be like dial up. This could stifle competition, make it harder for smaller companies and startups to compete and you can bet that any extra costs incurred will be passed on to the consumers.

The origins of the US net neutrality bill relate to a couple of cases where ISP's in the US were charging companies premiums for their data, blocking or restricting access to sites or restricting user access unless they paid for premium service. One of the arguments used by the ISP's was that they were going to use the revenue to improve the infrastructure. The fact that after implementing these policies they declared record profits, very high dividends and big bonuses for the bosses......!

Good article here with fairly accurate info

Allowing the ISP's to do this is a slippery slope to censorship, marginalisation of groups and a lot of other not good things for your internet browsing or choice. If it happens over there and the companies get away with it then the ISP's in Europe are going to try it as well.

I'm living in a country that practices censorship and in the middle of a political dispute that is having cyber fallout.

Net neutrality and freedom of internet access is something close to my heart.
