Virtual Reality - What games do you play?

Post by AnimusEradico » Fri Jun 15, 2018 4:55 pm

So, I got myself an Oculus Rift a couple or so months ago and I'm generally impressed by it. The games on average seem decently priced with plenty of offers regularly available in Oculus and Steam. These are some of the Games I have and Enjoy so far, which ones do you play and what do you think?

Arizona Sunshine - probably a game most people who have VR own. I enjoyed the game, though actually prefer the 'Horde Mode' for a challenge. I liked the fact you could play the game in 2 player all the way though and it's very weird standing in VR having a chat when in reality, the other person is miles away. Have purchased but not tried the DLC yet which gives a new stand alone main game, additional two handed weapons and additional Horde Mode levels. The original main game I felt was fun but relatively easy and maybe had too much walking about with repetitive game play.

Mages tale - Quite a new purchase and only spent a bit of time on it. The game itself is nuts, the developers I think were high when making it. It is very quirky which also makes it fun. Quite cool to cast spells and interact with puzzles and this game gives lots of pretty visuals to please your eyeballs. I also have the Wizards but not yet played.

In Death - Currently I'm loving this game. It's still being tinkered with so tends to change every now and then, though mostly for the better. There isn't a storeyline as such, it's about completing generated levels to get better scores, unlock achievements and new weapons/foes. In this respect, has kept me replaying it. The 'teleport' mechanics are just cool - movement via a teleportation arrow or thrown 'shard'; Really interesting when under attack. You definitely get those masculine reaffirming 'Legolas' moments where you feel like an archer god when pulling off some insane headshots or surviving situations that seemed dire.

Edge Of Nowhere - Creepy sort of TombRaider-esk game where you complete puzzles or try to make your way past nasty creatures in a tactical fashion. Quite linear but you do need to decide how to tackle situations as you get limited ammo. Also, a horror element involved where you get trippy visions. This one has a firm storeyline to follow. Quite a different use of VR which is mostly 'over-the-shoulder' but allows you to have a good look around while/before you move around. Graphically quite pleasing.

I'd also recommend downloading 'Face Your Fears' which is a free experience; if you have a fear of heights of creepy dolls - this one will have you shitting it!

I have the PSVR (Vr headset made for the PS4 for those who don't know) and have a few games I play on there.

Star Trek Bridge Crew - an amazing cross platform starship bridge simulator game, each person is in charge of a station (helm, engineering, tactical, and the captain who gives the orders) it's great, highly recommend that one.

Skyrim VR - As much as I love Skyrim, the VR verson is just a gimick and a horrible port to VR to keep the game going. Scaling is all off, 3D rendering is shit and you can see the skybox and depth issues in the "distance". Also makes me feel awful.

Farpoint - This one is amazing. Comes with the playstation AIM controller, a rifle style controller which makes the game amazing. Immersive, amazing scenery, and the gameplay is amazing. Would love a Co-op mode, but they don't have that at the moment.

Battle Zone - Like it's set in the Tron universe, but with tanks.. TANKS! Because the player is sat in a stationary cockpit, I found I didn't get motion sick as much as I thought I would, amazing game and very fast paced.

Resident Evil 7 VR - Fuck this game... too intense for my liking, played 25 minutes of it, and shat myself.. no thank you

Brookhaven Experiment - This is a horror zombie / creature wave shooting gallery style game. This game is clever. Uses the 360 immersion of the VR headset really well, and has 2 different styles of controllers to use.. If you are using it on Oculus, HTC Vive, or PSVR with the PS move controllers, you get a pistol and a torch. However, if you are using the PS AIM controller, you get a rifle with the torch underneath and can switch with a knife.
A few times this game has scared the shit out of me, but in fun way, unlike Resident Evil 7.

I have had extensive use of the HTC Vive also as me and my brother showcase the equipment at Tech shows, the HTC is amazing, tracking is 1:1 scale which is really good, if you have the funds, space, and computer to run this kit, I highly recommend this kit.

^ reviews of ones I've played.

My favourites so far are probably:

SuperHot VR (fascinating play on bullet time)

Knockout League (exhausting arcade boxing)

Space Pirate Trainer (arcade shooter set in space)

The Invisible Hours (the best use of VR I've seen - brilliant story telling making the most of the freedom of VR)

Shooty Fruity (hilariously difficult shooter where you have to scan products through a checkout while you shoot fruit)
HILARIOUS Youtube videos

SuperHot, Arizona Sunshine and Google Street View VR are all I’ve played. SuperHot was awesome!

When we had superhot, we couldn't get it working. It was a graphics issue.. I was showcasing the VR at the time and at the end of the sessions we could play whatever we wanted.. but because the monitor was through the onboard gfx and the HTC was through the gfx card, the PC wouldn't run the game. it was very strange.

I'm thinking about buying one for myself in the near future but mostly for racing games. But I wonder if the "resolution" is good enough. I play at 1440p on my monitor at the moment. And I'm a bit afraid it is a step down in that matter. Can you guys tell me any of your experiences with VR so far? Is it worth it or not?

You pretty much feel immersed, so although the screens are literally in front of your eyes, you don't really focus on the resolution. I've only tried the Rift and Vive and some of the mobile ones (like the galaxy one). Obviously Rift and Vive were much superior.

My advice would be to see if there are any local VR lounges around so that you can have a go before committing to buying.

Personally, I think VR is awesome and well worth it.

I have PSVR and like many of you I've been enjoying Superhot VR. Surgeon Simulator is a ton of fun if a little silly (I think that depends mostly on the player :P ) I've had a go at job simulator and that's quite good for an experience, Playstation VR worlds is a nice way to dip your toe in and showing people who aren't used to VR the Shark dive experience is nearly always funny. I've tried Doom VFR and I find it quite difficult to play, but that's probably me needing to get used to how the mechanics work in the game, I was also using the aimpoint controller so that might work for or against me. Gran Turismo Sport is quite good in VR if quite limited, it's more about experiencing a track and a car rather than a way to complete the game, I'm hoping to borrow my friends G27 race wheel to experience GT sport properly ;)
Finally, Wipeout Omega Collection. WARNING! make sure that YOU are VR compatible before you play this as some people can end up feeling motion sick playing other VR titles, Wipeout WILL make those people motion sick! I have been a fan of the Wipeout games since Wipeout 2097 on the original Playstation. For the uninitiated, it's sort of a hardcore "kart" racer, you pilot a hovership and as you race around the track there are weapon and boost pads you can use to get ahead. The game has been tweaked to prevent motion sickness somewhat, such as fixing the camera flat, (the ships bank through corners like aeroplanes do), reducing your field of view (think aeroplane cockpit with side armour), even turning on active assists as standard so you crash less. Last weekend I through myself in the deep end with this one, switching the field of view restriction off, setting the view from ship (where it's as if it's on a gimbal) to pilot (if the ship leans, so does your view) and continued the career mode where I had left off and, OH MY GOD, it is THE way to experience Wipeout, especially if you have decent headphones as well. After one of the events where the game actually warns you "The design of this track is extreme and may cause motion sickness" and it turns the assists on by default (promptly turned off by me) proceeding to get a gold in the event (a time trial on hardest difficulty from the second to last set of events, so one of the faster events in the game) whilst having to look UP to see how to exit a corner (actually makes it easier than without VR for using the track appropriately!) whilst Invaders Must Die by The Prodigy played almost reduced me to a laughing/crying mess. One of the top 3 gaming experiences of my life!
